Single Mothers-Single Parenting Facts

Single Mothers-Single Parenting Facts
The concept of single parenting has been around for quite some time now. It can be a result of a broken marriage, the loss of a partner or individuals choosing to be single parents without getting into the bond of marriage. There are several single parents who are trying to strike a balance between their professional and family life. Being a single parent can be very taxing at times and not knowing how to cope with the emotional stress, can take a heavy toll on your personal as well professional life. It can also be equally stressful for the children, to cope with single parenting. Awareness and knowledge can be helpful for those entering into single parenting and even those who are already single parents.
Pros
The myth that, children brought up by single parents often feel lonely and isolated, has been proved wrong. It has been observed that such children, if raised to be independent and confident, lead a very normal life and also succeed professionally.
Children of those single parents who have separated and moved on are often happy to see their parents happy, rather see them fight and argue daily. Such children do not develop behavioral disorders, unlike other children whose parents are constantly fighting.
Single parenting will also enable the parent to form a firmer bond with the child, to spend more quality time, to instill all the morals and values that the parent believes in and to communicate well.
Children of single parents learn to take responsibility at an early age, by helping around the household and helping with the daily chores. They also become independent sooner and learn to deal with difficult situations well.
If a single parent is in good and cordial terms with the former spouse, the child will have the scope of experiencing two different approaches towards life, which means a greater learning experience, as far as his/her life is concerned.
One of the most important facts is, that children of single parents would be more understanding towards their spouse and even towards their children.
Cons
The worst part of single parenting that results from divorce or the loss of a spouse is, the emotional trauma that the parent and children would have to go through. However, with the help of the support from family members and some counseling, coping with the situation can be made easier.
The next factor would be the guilt faced by the single parent, of not being able to provide a two-parent, 'normal' home to the child. Also, many single working parents suffer from the guilt of neglecting their child, due to excessive workload. Such children, who feel neglected and less cared for, may develop behavioral problems.
Single parents and their children may also be looked down upon, socially. Children may also face mocking by their peers and may give in to pressure, to be accepted by their friends. Such children often take to anti-social behavior like drug addiction, alcoholism and smoking.
An important single parent fact is, the financial burden that they would have to bear. Many times, single parents, especially single moms, may not be able to bear the financial burden which may be stressful for both the parent and the children.
Single parents with toddlers or pre-school aged children may find it difficult to handle their children all by themselves. It may be difficult for them to shuttle between their work, daycare and school. Due to their work commitments, they may not be able to spend quality time with the child.
These facts are in no way intended to discourage people from taking it up. In fact, single parenting can be an overwhelming experience, provided you plan accordingly, set rules and limitations for your children, like any other two-parent home and most importantly, bring them up with all the necessary love, care and affection!

Single Mother Resources

Single Mother Resources

The American Dream to own your own house inspires almost everyone. Single mother house loan problems though may keep a single mother buying a house from achieving that dream. Single mothers are the ones in society most in need of good, affordable housing, but in less of a position to get it. Some of the single mother house loan problems that a single mother buying a house can face are: having only one income, no credit history and little or no down payment. There are ways for a single mother to begin to work on these issues prior to applying for a single mom house loan.

Only One Income

In the past, most lenders have been reluctant to have only one signer on the loan. It is more common now. The statistics show that more single women are buying houses than single men, so a single mother buying a home is not such an odd occurrence anymore. However, the obstacle of income level is still a big problem for a single mother.

Housing loan guidelines say that only 30% of any homebuyer's income should go toward housing expenses. If the income is low, a person can be priced out of the market. Single mom house loan problems like this though can be finagled somewhat if the other two issues of credit and down payment are improved. Child support payments can be counted as income when filling out loan applications.

No Credit History

Some women have good employment history and enough income to buy a house but have either bad or little credit history. If owning a home is the goal, instead of renting an apartment one can choose to enter into a rent-to-own agreement on a house. This will increase the monthly payment on the housing, but a portion of it will go towards a down payment. The fact that a single mother makes payments monthly on time on a house will help smooth out the process when it comes to closing on the rent-to-own house. The mortgage at the end of the renting term should then be chosen with a good interest rate to lower the existing payment.

Small Or No Down Payment

The down payment is the biggest outlay when buying a home. Housing loans are based on the amount of the initial down payment, which most lenders prefer to be at least 10% of the purchase price of the house. However, as a single mother buying a house, you can find programs for first-time homebuyers with down payments as low as 3%. Some women's centers even have single mother housing assistance programs that match a down payment from a single mother to give them an added cushion and lower their monthly payments.

Housing loan requirements can make it a juggling act to have the necessary income, credit history and down payment to be approved for a loan. However, by working with agencies like HUD and working to strengthen income, credit history or down payment, a single mother can slowly work her way towards the achievement of buying her own home. With the help of HUD funding house grant single mothers may very well be able to purchase a house.

Financial Aid for Single Mothers

Financial Aid for Single Mothers

The government is providing assistance to single mothers to help them tide over tough times. The assistance, which may be in the form of cash benefits, food coupons, low interest loans or grants for single mothers, is of a temporary nature and aims to help women become self sufficient parents.

Fiscally Compatible Provisions for Single Mothers

Temporary Assistance To Needy Families (TANF): This program is administered by the US Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families. TANF has been designed to provide cash benefits on a monthly basis for food, clothing, shelter and other essentials. Families, where all members are U.S. citizens but children do not have both parents residing under the same roof, are eligible for assistance under TANF. Hence, a single mom, with children under the age of 19, can easily qualify for this program provided her family's gross income is less than the specified percentage of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The income ceiling is lower for women caring for disabled children and infants. As a parent, a woman will be expected to participate in the Individual Responsibility Plan (IRP) to ensure the well-being of her children. TANF provides once in a lifetime assistance that is restricted to a period of 60 months. The aim of this program is to ensure that at the end of 60 months the woman learns to take care of herself and her loved ones. A woman need not opt for this assistance for the entire 60 month period. She is free to exit the program when she chooses.

WIC Program: Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is meant for pregnant or postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5; provided the applicants' gross income lies below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), and that they are individually determined to be lacking in nutrition as determined by a health professional. The eligible participants receive checks or food coupons so that they can purchase foods rich in one or more nutrients, viz. protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C.

Providing Monetary Benefits for Single Mothers Wanting to Attend College

The following programs are not strictly meant for single mothers. Assistance is provided to anyone who intends to attend college but is unable to do so on account of financial constraints.

Federal Pell Grant has been designed to encourage people with financial constraints to get their college degree and move on to lead better lives. A single mom can apply for this grant since it may help her get a college degree. Single moms who are enrolled in postgraduate programs that will help them obtain a teacher certification may also be eligible to apply for the Federal Pell Grant. The students receive a check on a regular basis to help them fund their education.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is offered to undergraduates in dire financial need. Federal Pell Grant recipients are generally given priority over other applicants.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) is meant for eligible students who have already enrolled full-time in school and are in their first or second year of academic study.

Federal Perkins Loans is a direct loan that is granted by the government to students enrolled in schools either full-time or part-time. Unlike grants, these loans need to be repaid by the students to the schools participating in the Federal Perkins loans program. A nominal rate of interest is charged on the student loans and the terms of repayment are favorable to the borrower.

Free Single Mother Grants

Free Single Mother Grants

Free single mother grants are monetary packages intended to benefit single and unwed moms, especially those who are underage and come from underprivileged backgrounds. Through these grants they are able to cope with their everyday needs and not worry about major expenses; some of them may also use these grants in order to live a better life.

Where are free single mother grants usually found? There are actually many places to look for them, and these include government offices, non-government agencies, charity groups and community organizations, business establishments and of course, the internet. If you happen to find grant opportunities on the internet, be wary though, as these may be scams or fraudulent activities set up by persons who plan to take advantage of innocent single mothers.

Below are some ways to spot real free grant opportunities for single moms on the internet.

1. The site has its own contact numbers and real live help hotlines. Most establishments which offer grants have their own contact details for you to call in and make live inquiries, thus you can make a call and ask more about their offers right then and there. Sites which don't have such features may be a hoax, as the people behind them could not be reached.

2. The site doesn't ask for upfront payments. When searching for grants, you are looking for ways to receive money, and not the other way around. Grant sites usually redirect you to the establishments and offices which sponsor the grant packages for you to make applications, and when these sites ask for payment to process your application, then it's best to back out.

3. The site has an office which you can visit. Grant sponsors have their own offices and headquarters in which you can check out during your outdoor stroll, and there you can talk to the people about the grants they offer and ask for assistance regarding your application.

Free single mother grants are among the money packages which are taken advantage mostly by fraudsters, thus it is important to take extra caution when looking for them online. It's best to check out reviews and recommendations coming from friends and other reputable sources of knowledge before actually applying for them, so that you can keep yourself protected against various types of internet crimes and other issues in which you may lose not just your money but as well as your identity.

Scholarship For Single Mothers - Pell Grants For College

Single mothers will always be at the disadvantage when it comes to finances. Although there are moms with rich families, many are struggling financially because they receive no financial help for their home and their kids. Add to this fact that many single parents can only qualify for jobs with low income, they are always in the state of financial hardship. This is the reason why they have to work two to three jobs just to make ends meet. Unfortunately, kids are left alone and they are no longer reared to become normal members of the society.

The government recognizes the financial hardships of single mothers. To deal with this problem, they have created "Pell Grant" which is basically a scholarship program specifically for individuals who can't pay for a college education. Moms can go back to college with this aid, earn a degree and establish a career with better pay. The grant was named after Senator Claiborne Pell who sponsored the bill to create this type of help. This type of assistance is known in the country because it offers financial assistance without repayment after graduation. It's practically a no-strings attached aid for those who will be qualified.

The good news is that single mothers will most likely qualify for this grant. The biggest requirement for this type of grant is based on the annual earning of the individual. Because many single mothers are not doing well financially because of their monthly expenses, they can gain this financial assistance and go back to school.

But mothers are not the only ones that can gain from this type of help. As already indicated, the main requirement of this grant is based on the family's annual earning. Those who are out of work can opt for this type of help so that they can return to college and acquire new skills.

Financial Help for Single Mothers

In this economy, it’s hard enough to raise kids in a two-parent family. If you are a single mother, all the pressure is squarely on your shoulders. You don’t have the luxury of having a partner to help you pay the bills. On top of working a full time job and being the sole provider for your kids, you may also be dealing with other issues as well, such as hunting down a deadbeat boyfriend for child support or going through a divorce. These things are hard, and you need all the help you can get to handle some of your problems. Rent can be one of the hardest things to scrape together money for, but there are several programs that you should know about which provide single mom help with rent.
  • Government Grants
One the most widely available options that offers single moms help with their rent is government grants. Unbelievably, the government does realize how hard it is for people to get by, single moms in particular. To combat this epidemic, the government provides several options for you by way of grants.Grants are free money. You can apply for grants that specifically help with rent for single parents. In order to apply for grants to help pay your rent, visit the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s web portal to find out if you qualify, as well as to learn how you can apply single moms aid grants.
  • Public Housing Agency
Another government agency that can help with grants for single moms is your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). There are offices near you, and they are responsible for assisting people who are looking for a better place to live, as well as people who need help paying their housing bills.
The first question that probably crossed your mind is, “How much help can I possibly get?” With this program, the answer depends primarily on your income. If you qualify, no more than 30% of your income will go towards paying rent. You will still pay for some of the amount of your rent each month, but the PHA will pay for most of it. The agency pays your landlord directly on your behalf, and you are responsible for the remainder.

Single Mothers by Choice – Why Women Choose

There are women who do decide to become single mothers by choice. They take the time to research this decision and fully understand the implications that this type of choice will give them. Today there is a new breed of women emerging and these are single mothers by choice.

Why Choose to Become a Single Mother?

For many women this choice is made because of their strong desire to become a mother. These women just have not found the right partner and have decided that motherhood will become before marriage.Other reasons for making this type of decision are age and/or health issues. As you get older it is more difficult to become pregnant and the woman just doesn’t want to wait any longer. Other women have medical issues which mean the time is now or never!
For other women they know that they need energy to look after a small child and simply don’t want to wait any longer for Mr. Right to appear. These women have a good solid career and know that they can take the time to become a parent without jeopardizing their career path.
It has also been shown that women who mentally choose to become a single parent are far less stressed out by their decision. They have researched this choice and are more prepared for what lies ahead. These types of women are independent are proud of their choice and accomplishments.

Choices for Being a Single Mom

Single Mother By ChoiceThe two main options for becoming a single mother by choice are by adoption or by artificial insemination. Being a single mom or having a child without being married is no longer frowned upon. Nobody really thinks twice about anyone being a single mother anymore!
Women who are around the age of 35 and wish to experience being pregnant and giving birth often choose to go the artificial insemination route. You can now choose your donor from a list of characteristics and many women base their choices on what they would like to see in the man of their choice.
Using an anonymous donor is actually the most popular choice. Only about 5% of women use a donor that they do know!
Adopting a child is another solution for being a single mother by choice. To go this route you will need to have a good financial background. Adopting overseas is very popular now, especially for those wishing to adopt a baby or younger child.
To successfully go through the adoption process you will need to prove that you have a backup support system in place. This includes having a reliable babysitter or some form of daycare in place. Having a family or good friend to support you is another plus on your side.

Support for Single Mothers by Choice

Choices for Being a Single MomIf you don’t have close family that lives by you can get support from local online groups in your area. By searching on the internet you will discover support groups and chat rooms dedicated to single mothers. This can be a great way to connect with someone in your community.

The worst case scenario of being a single mother by choice is if your financial situation changes. This is especially true if you don’t have a strong backup contingency in place for when something goes wrong.
All of sudden you may have to work more hours just to make ends meet and this means your child isn’t receiving enough attention. This can lead to problems in school and with your relationship with each other.
Being a single mother by choice has worked for many, many women without any issues. As long as this is the path that you choose and you are happy with it. This is all that really matters. Your being a happy mom will reflect on your child and in turn they will be content with what you give them.
